Taxi patrons and drivers in the Northbridge and Fremantle entertainment precincts will soon benefit from a six-month taxi rank marshal trial.
From June 12, taxi marshals will be stationed on Friday and Saturday nights at the Milligan Street taxi rank, Northbridge and the Fremantle Markets rank, Fremantle.
Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said that the trial of taxi rank marshals - working alongside existing security guards - would further increase safety and make the co-ordination of taxi vehicles and taxi passengers more efficient.
“Taxi marshals will better facilitate the exodus of taxi patrons and taxis from these secure ranks, creating a safer environment in these popular entertainment precincts,” Mr O'Brien said.
“The marshals’ key role will be to quickly allocate passengers, co-ordinate taxi vehicle and passenger queuing as well as provide taxi-specific information to patrons, such as fares, passenger and taxi driver rights.”
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the trial would benefit those using the Northbridge entertainment precinct.
“The valuable services provided by the taxi marshals are expected to reduce waiting times and the more streamlined and efficient passenger-management approach has the potential to reduce antisocial behaviour by clearing patrons more quickly at these high-demand ranks,” Ms Scaffidi said.
At the Milligan Street rank, marshals will be present from midnight Friday until 4am Saturday, and from midnight Saturday to 5am Sunday. At the Fremantle rank, marshals will be present from midnight Friday until 5am Saturday, and from 11pm Saturday to 5am Sunday.
The results of the trial will be evaluated at the conclusion of the six-month period, before a decision is made on the possibility of a permanent service.
