Community engagement

Community engagement is about involving the community in the decision making process and is critical in the successful development of acceptable policies and decisions in government, the private sector and the community.

The Department for Planning and Infrastructure has been at the forefront of developing innovative ways in which to consult with the people who are affected by our decisions and policies.  In Western Australia we have taken a leading role in exploring innovations in community engagement, with 21st Century Town Meetings (Dialogues), Deliberative Surveys, Citizens' Juries, Multi Criteria Analysis Conferences and Consensus Forums.

Dialogue with the city (September 2003) was the largest interactive community engagement event held by the Department, involving over 1100 people.  Since then, more than 100 Dialogue participants have been involved in refining a wealth of information gathered to develop Network city: community planning strategy for Perth and Peel.

Our commitment to engaging with the community and stakeholders is demonstrated by our primary goal – to be known for positive engagement with stakeholders and customers as it:
- Provides innovative, timely and well-planned solutions for:  land use, transport and infrastructure delivery; and an accessible, safe and well-regulated transport system
- Manages growth to achieve beneficial economic, social and environmental outcomes

A key strategy in achieving this goal is to strengthen partnerships within Government and better engagement with communities and industry to facilitate beneficial economic, social and environmental outcomes across the state.  As a leading agency we are committed to improving the way in which the community is engaged, resulting in better outcomes for all.
