Urban Regeneration Conference
This conference, titled "Urban Regeneration Conference, creating communities through the art of place making", was hosted by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure in association with the Western Australian Planning Commission. The conference drew on local, national and international examples that explored the principles and practices of place making and its importance in urban regeneration. (Conference Report, June 2006)
Perth Coastal Planning Strategy
A series of workshops and forums were conducted during 2005 as part of the development of the Perth coastal planning strategy. The purpose of the Perth Coastal Planning Strategy community engagement program was to gain an understanding of the broader community's values and vision for the future of the Perth metropolitan coast.
Innovation in Community Engagement Conference
In May 2005 the Department for Planning and Infrastructure assembled in Perth some of the most progressive innovators and experts from the USA, Canada and Australia, who led a unique experiment in community engagement.
Over two days these initiators and experts took more than 300 participants through their leading edge techniques - citizens' juries, wisdom councils, dynamic facilitation, deliberative surveys, world cafe, and 21st century town meeting.
Scarborough Deliberative Survey
The innovative Scarborough deliberative survey and forum was designed to measure community attitudes to proposed development at the Scarborough beachfront. (Sept 2004)
Dialogue with the Pilbara - Newman Tomorrow
The Dialogue with the Pilbara called together people from Newman and the surrounding Pilbara region to create a vision for the future. (Sept 2004)
South West Metropolitan Public Transport Forum
In May 2003 more than 80 people from the community attended the South West Metropolitan Public Transport Forum to put forward ideas on how land should be used and transport linkages developed to better connect communities. Read about their views and the themes that emerged.
Sustainability Forum November 2002
The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Hon Alannah MacTiernan hosted a Sustainability Forum in November 2002.
Stakeholders invited to the forum included representatives from:
- the community
- the development industry
- State and local government officials
- Planning Institute of Australia
- Housing Industry Association
The purpose of the forum was to devise ways of better incorporating sustainability principles into statutory town planning.
The forum consisted of a series of presentations, followed by a workshop where participants examined how to improve the planning system.
Some of the topics included:
- strategies to enable developers and builders to embrace sustainable principles and practices
- initiatives to engage the community in sustainable planning
- how to assist local governments in supporting sustainable urban design
- ‘developer incentives’ to encourage the adoption of sustainability principles into urban design
