Minister determined to ensure community faith in licensing

Media statement

Release date: 28/01/09

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien says he will ensure every possible measure is taken to eradicate wrongdoing in Western Australia’s vehicle licensing system.

Mr O’Brien made the comments after allegations of fraudulent activities at the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) this week.

The Minister said although he wasn’t able to comment directly on the CCC’s ongoing hearings or investigations, he was determined to make sure Western Australians had faith in the State’s licensing system.

He said the CCC had officially notified the Department for Planning and Infrastructure of vehicle inspection irregularities on December 3, 2008.

The department had contacted 1,145 vehicle owners to advise their vehicle required a free reinspection due to allegations relating to an ongoing CCC enquiry.

“I am advised by the DPI that so far almost 700 of the 1,145 vehicles have been either reinspected or are booked in for reinspection,” Mr O’Brien said.

“To date, no CCC-related reinspections have resulted in vehicles being towed away or deemed ‘not roadworthy’.”

The Minister said he would continue to fully support director general Eric Lumsden in bringing about cultural change within the licensing area.
