New taskforce for Bunbury

Media statement

Release date: 12/05/09

Planning Minister John Day has announced the appointment of a high level taskforce to progress the Bunbury waterfront Eastside development.

Mr Day said the Bunbury Waterfront Taskforce, to be chaired by Bunbury MLA John Castrilli, would initially focus on resolving the development’s regional planning issues.

Other members of the taskforce would include Bunbury Mayor David Smith; nominees of the directors-general of the departments for Planning and Infrastructure; and Environment and Conservation; and a representative of the Landcorp Chief Executive.

“The State Government has also offered to match City of Bunbury funding of $10,000 to engage an independent consultant to report on a number of planning issues and community preferences related to Eastside,” the Minister said.

Mr Castrilli said the creation of the taskforce was a significant step forward in addressing planning issues and bringing the project in line with community expectations.

“The creation of the taskforce will help ensure that the development is appropriate for the site and fits in with what the community wants to see achieved,” Mr Castrilli said.

The taskforce terms of reference include:

  • defining the regional open space and city centre uses

  • creating a policy statement for developing any area identified for urban purposes

  • establishing any requirements for an environmental review of the project area

  • establishing transport planning requirements

  • advancing an amendment to the Greater Bunbury Region Scheme for public comment.

The first meeting of the group will be held on May 28.
