Department restructure

In April 2009, Premier Colin Barnett announced in Parliament the restructure of the Department for Planning and Infrastructure with the creation of;

  • the Department of Planning,
  • the Department of Regional Development and Lands, and
  • the Department of Transport

Date of effect

This change came into effect on the 1 July 2009.
  • The Department for Planning and Infrastructure was renamed the Department of Planning to ensure a stronger focus on strategic planning rather than on the regulatory and operational issues.
  • The functions of State Lands Services and Pastoral Lands were transferred to the new Department of Regional Development and Lands which was created through the restructuring of the Department of Local Government and Regional Development, which was renamed the Department of Local Government.
  • The Department of Transport will now focus on strategic transport planning and policy across the range of public and commercial transport systems that service the state as well as operational transport functions.
