Opening Carnarvon’s upgraded airport terminal today, Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said the new terminal building and additional facilities would undoubtedly benefit the community and help to attract further economic growth to the region.
“The Shire of Carnarvon’s investment of more than $500,000 in this project is outstanding and demonstrates genuine action on behalf of the community,” Mr O'Brien said.
“Airport improvements included a new terminal building; installation of two check-in areas; automatic doors; pedestrian pathways; disabled access ramps; and ablution blocks.
“I am sure the new facilities will bring greater comfort and accessibility to the 20,000 passengers who presently travel to and from Carnarvon Airport each year.
“In addition to the current upgrades, I am pleased to announce the Shire of Carnarvon has been allocated more than $400,000 from the 2009-10 Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS) to part fund the reconstruction and cement stabilising of the runway.
“The Liberal-National Government recognises the importance of regional air services.
“Since 1997, more than $28million of RADS funding has been announced for more than 250 regional aviation infrastructure projects.
“The Shire of Carnarvon has previously been awarded $68,000 in 2003 to upgrade airport lighting, $15,000 in 2004 to commission an airport master plan and $44,000 was awarded in 2006 to commission a geotechnical survey on the existing runway.
“I look forward working with the Shire of Carnarvon, discovering new opportunities to further enhance the infrastructure and services available at the airport.
“The State Government is building stronger regional communities by ensuring they receive their share of the infrastructure dollar.
“RADS funding, together with progressive local government initiatives, will ensure that local communities, as well as industry, are well serviced by their regional airports.
