Metropolitan boating enthusiasts wanting to learn more about safe navigation to Rottnest can join the annual convoy to the island in November.
The Rottnest Convoy, organised by the Boating Industry Association in conjunction with the Department of Transport, on November 21 and 22 provides an excellent opportunity prior to summer to reinforce the importance of boating safety.
Transport's Supervising Marine Officer Mark Briant said the convoy provided a hands on learning experience for skippers covering the safe navigation of the waters to and around Rottnest – one of the State’s favourite boating destinations.
The convoy begins with participants travelling to Rottnest in their own vessel under escort by Transport's marine patrol.
During the weekend participants can attend equipment demonstrations and lectures about safe boating and are also taken on an escorted tour around the waters of Rottnest and shown how to navigate the numerous popular bays.
Mr Briant said three patrol vessels and six marine officers from Transport would be involved in this year’s convoy.
“This is a very important event on the annual calendar of marine safety events and the allocation of resources for the weekend will have ongoing benefits for those taking part,” he said.
The convoy is designed for craft between five and ten metres in length that can maintain a minimum speed of 15 knots.
Mr Briant said up to 60 boats were expected to take part in the convoy which would depart early Saturday morning from three locations: Fremantle, Hillarys and Woodman Point.
“For new or inexperienced boat owners who are thinking of visiting Rottnest this summer the annual convoy is a chance to take their first trip to the island in the safety of a group," he said.
“The knowledge and experience shared by the other skippers taking part will give participants the information they need to safely navigate their next trip to the island.”
Boat owners wanting to take part in the convoy need to register with the Boating Industry Association of Western Australia and will be required to attend a compulsory briefing on November 18, 2009.
