Our contribution to Western Australia
The work of the Department for Planning and Infrastructure is so diverse and so wide-ranging that almost every person in the state benefits in one way or another. Of all government agencies, the Department is the second highest contributor (after Treasury) to Western Australia’s revenue base, providing funds for valuable community services.
Some of our activities included:
- In the area of planning approvals, directly contributing to economic activity valued at $3 billion;
- Generating 85,000 direct and indirect jobs in towns and suburbs across Western Australia;
- Supporting the building and development industries through the approval of building lots, to a value upwards of $1 billion;
- Providing more than $40 million in grants and subsidies to assist students, pensioners and people with a disability and help build airport, bicycle and boating infrastructure;
- Speaking directly with 100,000 people through community forums and workshops;
- Issuing 1.3 million licence renewals for cars, trucks, motor cycles and trailers;
- Registering 72,000 recreational boats and returning funds to the boating community through safety and education programs;
- Conducting more than 40,000 driving tests;
- Conducting more than six million licensing transactions, including online payments;
- Reducing car use by 100 million kilometres through implementing the innovative TravelSmart programs - the equivalent of taking 7500 cars off our roads;
- Selling more than 14,000 custom vehicle plates, earning revenue in excess of $2.7 million;
- Managing 6000 Ministerials and 400 Parliamentary Questions;
- Providing boat harbours and facilities at 31 locations along the Western Australian coast;
- Providing protected harbours for Western Australia’s fishing industry which provides $750 million to the state’s economy;
- Managing leases to the pastoral industry that contributes $200 million to our economy;
- Arranging regional land assembly for LandCorp at 21 locations throughout the state;
- Acquiring 350 parcels of land for future gas corridors and expansion of existing infrastructure corridors;
- Commencing 147 exclusions on 97 pastoral leases to address competing demands on the land for Aboriginal use, tourism, conservation and recreation;
- Completing 7000 Crown land transactions;
- Managing 200 native title negotiations and consultations for proposals affecting Crown land;
- Preparing legal and settlement documents for the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre;
- Managing approximately 2000 leases over unallocated Crown land, covering more than 250 purposes.
