Strengthening links with Parliament and Government

In a responsive and accountable democracy, effective communication between government agencies, their Minister and the Parliament is critical.

Elected representatives rely on departmental staff to provide accurate advice to enable them to make good decisions and to help them respond properly to the needs, concerns and questions of their constituents.

Members of the community also need to know that if they choose to write to a Minister, their letter will be dealt with quickly and accurately.

The new Ministerial and Parliamentary Services unit established almost two years ago reports directly to the Director General and Corporate Executive on all matters of relevance to the Minister.

In 2003-04, the Department further improved its service to the Minister's office by implementing a state-of-the-art electronic tracking system that has superseded the outdated 'hard copy' system.

This was a critical improvement initiative for our Minister and was implemented under the customer category of the Business Excellence Framework.

The system was custom-built by Department staff and has greatly improved response times and accuracy of information flowing between the Department and the Minister's office.
