Aviation training

The Department's aim is to attract international pilot and other aviation skills training that will provide increased economic opportunities for Western Australia's aviation industry and infrastructure.

International training students

Purpose

The State Government has developed the Aviation Training Strategy to attract additional international airlines/flying schools to Western Australia. China Southern Airlines and Singapore International Airlines have established pilot training operations at Merredin and Jandakot Airports respectively. The Department administers the ongoing promotion and liaison of the strategy.

Objectives

The objectives of the strategy are to identify opportunities associated with the further development of pilot training in regional Western Australia and to coordinate the Government and private sector to attract international pilot training to regional Western Australia.

Marketing and implementation

The Department promotes Western Australia internationally as the ideal location to train international airline pilots. The strategy, developed with assistance from the Department of Industry and Technology and the Regional Development Commissions, is designed to:

  • Develop an international awareness of the aviation training advantages in Western Australia
  • Build upon the success of international pilot training in Western Australia
  • Attract new international pilot training to Western Australia

The State has uncluttered skies, good weather and excellent airport facilities at a number of locations. In addition, there are many local aerodromes that have the potential to be purchased and developed to training schools' specifications.

Clarifying a client's particular needs and location of preference will lead to identifying an appropriate incentives package - should this be necessary.

The State Government has already received approaches from interested parties to investigate Western Australia for pilot training.
