What is the Cycle Instead Sponsorship Program?
The Cycle Instead Sponsorship Program provides volunteer groups, sporting / active transport organisations, health services and local government authorities with opportunities to effectively plan, implement and evaluate community based events and programs promoting cycling. Event organisers are provided with access to limited funds for running the event, advertising and promotional purposes, comprehensive media kits and signage, merchandise and other expenses.

What are the criteria for applying?
A set of criteria has been developed to ensure sponsorships are allocated in a fair and equitable way. It is important you read through these criteria to ensure your group is eligible for sponsorship before applying.
You can download the Cycle Instead Sponsorship Criteria here (pdf 43kb). The key criteria are:
- The grant maximum is $1,000 (plus GST). Note – grants of $1,000 are not common, sponsorship funds are generally within the range of $300 - $600 (plus GST).
- The program must promote the transport, health, recreational, environmental and/or economic benefits of cycling or focus on cycling safety and education, as one of its key purposes.
- Sponsorships will not be granted to assist with financing costs associated with running an organisation, such as staff and equipment costs.
- Sponsorships will not be granted for capital works.
- Travel, tours, conference attendance, camps are not eligible for sponsorship.
- Sponsorships will not be granted to agencies already receiving funding from car manufacturers, companies associated with the tobacco or alcohol industries, or the fast food industry.
- The program does not support activities planned for outside of Western Australia.
- Sponsorship will not be provided to assist payment of budget deficits or retrospective funding.
- Groups that have previously received support and did not fulfil obligations as per previous sponsorship contracts will not be supported.
- Sponsorship will not be granted to individuals. Applications must be submitted by a Not for Profit organisation, association, Local Government Authority, transport or health organisation, which will take lead responsibilities for project delivery, result evaluation and audited expenditure.

What is the assessment process?
Every application received is carefully assessed before a decision on whether to provide sponsorship is made.
In summary the process is as follows:
-
We notify you that we have received your application and supporting material.
-
We review your sponsorship application and ensure all required information has been provided.
-
We assess your application. In the course of assessing your application, the Sponsorship Coordinator may contact you to gain a better understanding of the background to your application.
-
We advise you in writing of the outcome of your application.
What conditions apply?
When an organisation applies for sponsorship, the chairperson or president (or, in the case of a local government authority, the chief executive officer) will be asked to sign a declaration form accepting certain conditions associated with receiving a sponsorship.

How long will it all take?
If you have provided all of the necessary supporting material with your submission it will take between 2 - 6 weeks before you hear whether your application has been successful.
If, however, your application is complex, does not fit readily into our existing sponsorship guidelines or has not been completed correctly it may take longer to process.
Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. In exceptional cases where a decision is urgently needed we will try to respond quickly but we ask that in making an application you plan ahead to allow us time to assess your application.

Sponsored Events & Programs
The Department for Planning and Infrastructure has sponsored a variety of programs, from major competitive cycling events to smaller community based activities. Some examples of recent sponsorships are:
Tour de Perth
The Kalamunda Hills recently hosted WA's premier two-day cycling event, the Tour de Perth. This major event on the competitive cycling calendar attracted the best riders from around Australia, gained valuable media attention for cycling as a sport and further promoted the Cycle Instead health message.
Further information on competitive cycling events can be found on the Western Australian Cycling Federation website.
Cycle to Work Breakfast – Main Roads WA
Main Roads WA encouraged its employees to cycle to work as part of the agency's Health and Lifestyle Program. Recognising the health and financial benefits of cycling, this program was the first step towards boosting the number of cyclists in the organisation.
The event involved a free breakfast for staff who cycled to work, and provided information on the cycling facilities and support available to employees. Surveys of staff also provided valuable information on incentives and barriers to cycling, which will be used to further assist cycling promotion in the agency.
