Cycle to School Day - Wednesday 14 March 2007

This year, 116 Western Australian schools took the opportunity to organise this annual event and to make it fun for students, parents and teachers who chose to cycle to school on the day.

Part of the annual Cycle Instead Bikeweek, the 2007 event was held on Wednesday 14 March, although a number of schools opted to hold it on a different day.
.
The overall number of students who rode to school on the day increased again this year to a record 13,500, despite a slight reduction in the number of participating schools (130 in 2006).

The upward trend in student participation proves that cycling is a popular mode of travel and recreation within the school communities. Also, the popularity of Cycle to School Day is maintained, despite other competing programs and an increased demand on teachers’ time.

The rewards are many. For students, they range from improved health and well-being, to building life-long habits of using active transport options. The whole community benefits from reduced congestion around the schools and a reduction in greenhouse emissions.

Mr Daryl Mansfield, the Deputy Principal of South Perth Primary School said  “we had an awesome Cycle to School Day on Wednesday, 14 March! The whole school community got behind the event, with numerous parents cycling to school with their younger children, many of them for the first time.  We finished up with 65% of our total school population choosing to cycle or walk to school on the day. …

Mr Gordon de Snoo of John Calvin Christian College said:  “Of a school population of 297 (Years 5-12), we had 231 riders - a percentage of 77.78%!  Our school draws its students from Rockingham, Byford as well as around the school area of Armadale. …

Each student who rode to school on the day received a sticker, a temporary tattoo and a participation certificate, and schools were awarded participation certificates.
In a draw involving the schools that provided feedback on their events, Kinlock Primary School  won a GIANT Cypress Bicycle valued at $500.

Next year’s Cycle to School Day is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 March 2008.
