Ride along the Sunset Coast

One of our Recreational Cycling Rides, this booklet captures highlights of the coastal journey including Sorrento Quay, Scarborough Beach, Cottesloe Boardwalk, the sights of Fremantle and the new landscaped parklands in Coogee.

The entire route can be completed as a full day excursion or divided into a series of individual rides that vary in length from 5 to 8 kilometres. Although primarily aimed at cyclists, many of the shorter sections also provide a wonderful sensory experience for people on foot.

The booklet contains maps and text that feature picnic areas, swimming beaches, public toilets, fishing spots and even inshore shipwrecks. Any potential hazards for cyclists and pedestrians are also indicated where applicable.

"Ride along the Sunset Coast" is now available free of charge from most bike shops, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance at 2 Delhi Street West Perth and various outlets along the route itself, or you can view it online below.

This scenic coastal ride has been mapped with the recreational/family cyclist and pedestrian in mind. The entire route (or individual rides) can be completed in either a southerly or northerly direction. For the purposes of clarity, the publication has been written in a north to south aspect with the ocean on your right. If you wish to travel in the opposite direction just reverse the information accordingly. It should be noted that at many times of the year the prevailing wind makes riding southwards more difficult than riding northwards.

Shared paths along the coastal route come in four surface types:

  • Red-paved: new, very good quality, often painted with signage
  • Bitumen: older, good quality, not painted
  • Concrete: new or old, varying quality, often painted with signage
  • Paving bricks: new or old, good quality, usually near buildings

The route has been divided into eight individual rides of a similar distance. Each of these rides begins and ends at a convenient location that has facilities such as toilets, public telephones, car parking and, in most cases, a kiosk, pub or store. Every section has its own special sights and sounds, all sharing a glorious backdrop of the Indian Ocean. Many of the more popular places of interest have been highlighted, such as fishing spots, swimming beaches, lookouts and several close-to-shore shipwrecks.

Although there are numerous places to obtain a drink along the route, both riders and pedestrians should carry water with them, especially during hot weather and on longer rides or walks.
