Commence your ride or walk at Cottesloe Beach near the Indiana Tea House and head south on the shared path between Marine Parade and the beach. This stretch can become very busy during the warmer months so cyclists should watch for pedestrian activity.

Follow the path as it goes past the Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club and winds its way along the low sand dunes. The wreck of the Elizabeth is out to sea and commemorated by a small plaque.

After about one kilometre, the shared path changes direction slightly and runs down the western side of Curtin Avenue. Follow it as it goes around the Vlamingh Memorial. About 400 metres offshore from this point an artificial surf reef has been constructed.

The shared path comes out at the Surf Club Cafe car park where it changes briefly to a red-paved surface. Other facilities here include public toilets and a kiosk. Continue going south as the path becomes concrete and make a left turn to cross Port Beach Road at the southern end of the intersection. Extreme care is required here as this is a very busy signalised intersection that carries large trucks heading for the wharf. On the other side of the intersection, also take care as there is a slip road and a rail crossing to negotiate.

Continue heading east along the concrete shared path next to Tydeman Road. Watch for traffic using the several driveways and access roads along this stretch. Follow the path past the Railway Hotel (on the opposite side of the road) and under the rail bridge.

Follow the path as it rounds a bend to the right and passes the front steps of the historic Swan Hotel. Care needs to be taken here as it can get busy with patrons leaving the pub via the car park and on foot. Continue on the shared path leading across the Fremantle Traffic Bridge and then to the right along Queen Victoria Street.

Note: the path across the bridge is narrow and prone to strong cross winds.

About 100 metres after the bridge you will see a steep ramp heading down toward the harbour. Follow this and cross over Beach Street to the shared path on the other side near Fremantle Port Authority Gate 3. Take this shared path eastwards under the Fremantle Traffic Bridge past the Rottnest Ferry Terminal and end at J Dolan Park next to the river's edge. Facilities here include picnic tables, drinking fountain, public toilets and a kiosk opposite the ferry terminal.
