Help Erik achieve his goal

Danish cyclist, Erik Straarup is about to attempt a record-breaking bike ride around Australia and he's looking for a bit of support to get him on his way.

Erik intends cycling the 14,500km route in a mind-numbing 54 days -- to beat the current record of 55 days, 17 hours and eight minutes achieved by Australian cyclist Eugen Schilter.
As an incentive, Eugen has offered $15,000 to anyone who can beat his record.

Erik plans to donate the prize money to the Red Cross.

Perth people can support Erik in a few ways.

  • You can make a Pedal Point pledge, which is a fixed amount set to a part of Erik’s journey, with all funds raised going to Red Cross services in Australia and overseas, by going to http://www.redcross.org.au/ or by contacting Joanna Keenan on 9225 1927.
For example, if you pledge $10 for Erik to pedal from Perth to Esperance you can help Red Cross to provide transport for someone who has difficulty attending a vital medical appointment.  By pledging $100, Red Cross can help family members separated by disaster or conflict to find each other again.
  • You come along to cheer Erik on the start of his epic journey from the Swan Bell Tower at 8am on Saturday 29 March.
  • You can cycle with Erik to Fremantle on the first leg of his journey.

This will be Erik’s third cycling trip around Australia.

In 2006, a similar journey helped Australia’s Red Cross Blood Service generate awareness of the need to donate blood.

Information on Erik’s trip can be found on his website, and he will be providing a complete diary of his journey via email to those who make a Pedal Point pledge.

Results of public consultation for PBN Review now available

The ARRB Group has completed the assessment of the public consultation undertaken as part of the Perth Bicycle Network Plan Review.

The information gathering component of the review has been extensive. The public were invited to attend three workshops or complete online surveys to provide relevant information. Information was also received from several cycling interest groups that represent a huge number of Perth cyclists. Key stakeholders, including local government authorities and state government agencies, also had the opportunity to provide input through a workshop and online surveys.

The information assessed has been collated into two volumes.

Volume 1 is a summary of the findings and recommendations

Volume 2 details the responses assessed as part of the works

The Cycling Unit would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide information as part of the consultation process. This information will now be used in the preparation of the new PBN Plan.

Disruption to Roe Highway PSP Users - Fern Leaf Court, Leeming

Clough Projects Australia, on behalf of Main Roads WA, will soon commence the construction of a noise suppression wall beside the Roe Highway Principal Shared Path near Fern Leaf Court in Leeming.

The works are scheduled over a period of two weeks between 11 and 25 October 2007, and some level of disruption to path users can be expected over this period.

Path users are requested to be particularly vigilant for potential hazards while passing through the area and to follow the directions given by traffic controllers.

Red Bull Air Race 2007 - Path closure from 23 October to18 November

The Red Bull Air Race will be held in Perth on the 3 and 4 November 2007.

Large numbers of pedestrians will be using the shared paths on the Perth and South Perth foreshores on those days and cyclists using the paths should take extra care around pedestrians and allow significantly more time to reach their destinations.

In addition, a section of the shared path along the South Perth Foreshore between the eastern end of South Perth Esplanade and Coode Street will be closed from 23 October to 18 November 2007.

The closure is to allow organisers to construct and dismantle a grandstand and other structures.

A temporary diversion will be put in place that will maintain cyclist and pedestrian access between South Perth Esplanade and Coode Street.

A section of path immediately west of Ellam Street will also be closed from 23 October to 18 November 2007.

A temporary path surface (grass track) will be used to provide a safe and trafficable route around this area. The trafficable surface will be narrower than the surrounding paths and is not designed for fast moving traffic.

As a consequence, cyclists are requested to slow down and exercise caution while travelling through this area.

Bell Tower Ride - National Ride to Work Day, Wednesday 17 October 2007

Celebrate National Ride to Work Day by joining the Cycling Unit team on the Bell Tower Ride.  The ride will have multiple starting points, all finishing by 8:30 am at Barrack Square, Perth.

The participants will be welcomed by Ms Jaye Radisich, MLA, Member for Swan Hills, who is riding into the Bell Tower from her workplace.  There will be prizes and giveaways, including discount vouchers for a nearby cafe.

City workers who would like to take part should meet up with members of our staff at one of six starting points at 8.00am. The final leg of the ride to the Bell Tower will take about 15 minutes.

We would really like to see a lot of women joining us on the day, to help boost the participation rates of women cycling.

Train Shutdown 7 - 14 October 2007

Part of the rail network will be shut down to connect the new Mandurah Line with the existing Joondalup Line. During this period, trains on the Fremantle Line will be replaced by buses, while on the Joondalup Line trains will only run between Clarkson and Leederville.

City workers who use these passenger train services will require alternative transport during this time.

HOW DO I GET TO WORK?

How about cycling to work instead? Check out our cyclebility maps, you may be surprised at how quickly you can cycle to work!

New warning signage at entrance to East Perth Station Car Park

Main Roads WA has installed new signage and pavement markings on the Principal Shared Path (PSP) at the entrance to the East Perth Train Station car park, on East Parade.

This is the only location on the Midland PSP where private vehicles are allowed to cross the path.

Drivers attempting to access or exit the station car park, particularly in peak hour traffic, are often concentrating on avoiding other vehicles and may be unaware of cyclists travelling along the path.

The new markings will raise the awareness of new users and serve as a reminder to regular users of the car park to look out for cyclists while entering or exiting.

For cyclists who are not familiar with the path, a hazard warning on the approach to the car park entrance prompts them to be vigilant as they pass through the area.

The provision of signage and pavement markings of this type on the Perth Bicycle Network is a relatively new initiative and it is envisaged that other potentially hazardous areas will have similar high quality treatments in the future.

Prize gives motivation
As one of the winners in The West Australian’s “Bike-A-Day” competition, a very happy Zaneta Georgievska recently collected her new bicycle from Wanneroo Cycle City.

Zaneta said owning a new bike had provided the motivation to exercise more.  “I have not won anything for a very long time and now I have no excuse for getting fit and not going on bike rides with the children.”

This enthusiasm has obviously rubbed off, because Zaneta’s sister now thinks it would be a good idea to buy a bike and ride with her daughter.

Bushfires in the Perth hills affect popular mountain bike tracks - March 2005

It is advised jointly with CALM that mountain bikers avoid the area bound by Great Eastern Hwy, Mundaring Weir Rd, Canning Rd and as far south as Albany Hwy. While CALM and FESA have the fire contained, there is still the risk of flare-ups, especially over the weekend when hot and gusty weather is expected. It is strongly advised that even once the fire passes that no one enter the affected area until the trails have been checked for safety. It is expected that for a minimum of 4 weeks, and possibly not until spring, will the trails be considered safe due to falling limbs and trees, which are known as "widow makers" for very good reason. This notice will be updated as soon as information comes to hand. Daily contact is being maintained with CALM. For more information on the fire, please go to http://www.fesa.wa.gov.au/or www.perthmtb.com

ASL are at the intersection of Clayton and Lloyd Streets Midland and Helena Street Midland. ASL are planned for West Coast Highway at Brighton Road, Hale Road, The Boulevard and Oceanic Drive (to be implemented during the 2003-04 financial year).
