Ride 4 - Masons Landing to Riverton Bridge

Start your ride or walk from Masons Landing Park. This location was named after pioneer sawmill owner Benjamin Mason. During the 1860s, timber from the Hills region was loaded onto barges at this spot and transported to Fremantle. From the park, ride down Marriamup Street until you reach the junction with Leige Street. On the other side you will see a red bitumen shared path heading west along the river bank.

Follow this path for about 500 metres to a T junction. You can take the path in either direction. To the left, it heads over a small footbridge. To the right, it winds around to the Kent Street Weir.

If you choose the left path over the bridge, on the other side, the shared path runs through some reed beds, past a car park and then up a slight incline.

You will come to an intersection with paths leading off in several directions. The right branch takes you about 400 metres down to the Kent Street Weir. This structure was built in 1928 to stop the movement of salt water upstream. A narrow bridge gives access to the northern side of the river which has a large grassed area with covered tables and public toilets. The famous Castledare Miniature Railway is located just west of the weir.

To continue the ride to Riverton, head straight through the path intersection and sweep around in a large curve through Bicentennial Park. The path then straightens out and runs alongside Vervain Way for a short distance. Another couple of hundred metres takes you to Riverton Drive East.

Take a sharp right turn when the path reaches Barbican Street, then head over the small Riverton Bridge. On the other side you will find barbeques, picnic tables, public toilets and a handy little kiosk/cafe that overlooks the river foreshore.
