Mundaring Rail Loop bike ride - description

Mundaring Weir Hotel:
Leave the hotel car park and cross over to the car park on the opposite side of the road. Follow the gravel track to the right of the water pipeline; this is the Kattamorda trail. The Kattamorda trail follows the road, but a little below it.

Point a:
Junction of Allen Road with Mundaring Weir Road (distance 0.6 km; total distance 0.6 km)

After about 600 m you will reach Mundaring Weir Road. Carefully turn right onto Allens Road, which leads up to The Hills Forest Activity Centre.

Point b:
Hills Forest Activity Centre (distance 0.6 km; total distance 1.2 km)

As you reach the main car park on the right hand side, look for a wide gravel road heading north, off to the left. This is signed with large concrete posts with large rectangular MTB signs (blue bike on silver background). This is the Kattamorda trail.

Follow the signs in a generally northerly direction up to Mundaring. Be aware that the trail crosses Mundaring Weir Road at two locations, and take extreme care when crossing this road.

Point c:
Southerly crossing of Mundaring Weir Road (distance 3.0 km; total distance 4.2 km)

Shortly after passing through a picnic spot, you will cross over to the western side of Mundaring Weir Road. After crossing the road, veer right, back to a north-westerly direction and continue to follow the Kattamorda trail.

Point d:
Northerly crossing of Mundaring Weir Road (distance 1.2 km; total distance 5.4 km)

Cross over to the eastern side of Mundaring Weir Road. Watch out for the ditches at the side of the road.

After crossing the road, veer left, back to a northerly direction and continue to follow the Kattamorda trail.

Point e:
Mundaring Sculpture Park and Railway Heritage trail (distance 1.7 km; total distance 7.1 km)

Follow the Kattamorda trail until it joins the Railway Heritage trail, turn left (west) and enter Mundaring Sculpture Park. Use caution when crossing the busy road.

Point f:
Single track off Railway Heritage trail (distance 0.7 km; total distance 7.8 km)

Shortly after passing through the old station and crossing one road, take a sharp left up a short section of single track. Be very careful, as this comes out abruptly onto Phillips Road, opposite Craig Place. The turning off the Railway Heritage trail is marked by a concrete post with a large rectangular MTB sign.

Cross Phillips Road and go up Craig Place, heading south. At the end of the bitumen, follow the signed track to the south-south-west (not the most westerly track).

After about 300 m the track joins another. Veer slightly right, still heading in a southerly direction.

Point g:
Tight turn in track (distance 1.1 km; total distance 8.9 km)

After passing over a bit of a sandy patch and a few humps, you pass by some largeish trees. Just after the trees, the trail hits another trail in a T-junction. Turn left, and you should now be heading east-south-east.

Point h:
Junction with Martin Road (distance 0.9 km; total distance 9.8 km)

After a while the track becomes steeper downhill, with a few ruts and roots. Take care, as the track emerges onto Martin road (a bitumen road).

Turn right onto the road and follow it. At the bottom of the hill, the road turns back into a track. Keep following the track.

Point i:
Pass under power lines (distance 1.45 km; total distance 11.25 km)

Pass directly under the power lines, crossing over the service road, follow the track straight across and continue. After heading downhill, you will cross Atkins Road. Use caution here. You will soon be approaching an area which is occasionally used by 4WDs and trail bikes (note the 4WD trial sign some distance further down the track on the left hand side).

Point j:
Crossing Bourkes Gully (distance 2.2 km; total distance 13.45 km)

Just after a steep rutted descent, you will arrive at a 4-way intersection which is more like a T-junction. Take the tightest left track down the steep gully. At the bottom follow a very rutted track (keeping on the right-hand side). This is North Ledge Road.

Point k:
North Lookout (distance 0.7 km; total distance 14.15 km)

As you reach the highest point on North Ledge Road, take the detour off to the right to the lookout over Mundaring Dam. Re-join North Ledge Road and continue following the road. This road gets steeper, so take care.

Point l:
Emerging on Mundaring Weir Road (distance 1.45 km; total distance 15.6 km)

North Ledge Road steepens quite a bit and as you enter more into the pine forest, turn right down a steep road. Take great care not to fang it down here too fast as it emerges abruptly onto Mundaring Weir Road. Turn left, and climb up the bitumen back to point a.
