High street, Fremantle upgrade

Background

High Street, between Stirling Highway and Carrington Street, Fremantle, is part of the major east-west transport route linking the Kewdale freight terminal with the Fremantle Inner Harbour.  It is currently a four-lane undivided road with uncontrolled driveway access to a number of residential properties.  As part of a major freight route, High Street carries a high proportion of heavy vehicles daily.

The Department is undertaking a major study into the proposed upgrade of this 1.5km section of High Street, to a four-lane divided road with full access control that will cater for existing and predicted traffic well into the future.

The proposal to upgrade, which came out of the 2002 Freight Network Review was identified as a high priority project by the Local Impacts Committee to improve traffic management through the southern suburbs (Local Impacts Report Final Report September 2005).

The study aims to ensure the upgrade will provide a safer, more user-friendly road environment for nearby residents and road-users of High Street. The proposed upgrade will also enhance the streetscape and reduce the traffic noise levels that currently impact nearby residents.

Consultation

Consultation with local residents, property and business owners, key interest groups and relevant Government agencies is important to the study to help determine the best upgrade option. This occurs through a community reference group, forums, workshops, personal meetings, newsletters, mail-outs, a website and local media.

Community input is being sought through a number of forums and workshops, the first of which was held in May 2008.

Updates and information about the study and related events will be provided through project newsletters, this website and local media.

A decision on the final preferred option for the upgrade to High Street will be made in further consultation with the community and all relevant stakeholders.
