Registration and vessel surveys

Australian Builders Plate

The Australian Builders Plate (ABP) is an information plaque. By law, it is required to be fitted to all recreational vessels that began building on or after 2 September 2006 that are either offered for sale to the public for the first time, or for which an application for registration for the 1st time in WA is being made. There are some exceptions, such as boats not designed to be mechanically powered.

Commercial vessel surveys

Commercial vessels operating in Western Australian waters are required to carry and display a valid Certificate of Survey.

The Department for Planning and Infrastructure renews a vessels' Certificates of Survey annually, after a duly authorised Marine Surveyor has carried out a safety equipment survey.

Payment of a Survey Fee is required before the vessel is surveyed and the Certificate of Survey issued. Additionally, vessels are required to be surveyed out of the water, at intervals not exceeding 2 years, with the propeller shaft(s) (if fitted) surveyed at intervals generally not exceeding 4 years.

Vessel registration - BoatCode (HIN Number)

Boatcode provides a means to positively identify a boat by using a unique series of numerals and letters permanently affixed to the hull.

Boats cannot be registered without the hull identification number (HIN) being verified and recorded on the Department for Planning and Infrastructure's (DPI) database.
