Learner drivers

There are various steps involved in getting your driver's licence. You will need to develop your knowledge of the road rules, your driving skills and safe driving habits. The following information should help you get started:

  • Getting your driver's licence
    This section contains information and resources on how to get a learner driver permit, how you will be assessed and the steps you need to take to get a learner's permit for different types of vehicles.

  • How much will it cost to learn to drive?
    A breakdown of the fees you will need to pay and when you will need to pay them.

  • Drive Safe book
    The Drive Safe book is a guide to safe driving and an interpretation of the law. You can download or podcast a complete copy or an individual section of the Drive Safe book.

  • Brochures and downloads for learner and novice drivers
    Download some popular brochures and booklets key to helping you pass your test.

  • Interactive tests to try out your skills
    Have a go at a sample version of the theory test you will need to pass before you can be granted a learner's permit or try out the Hazard Perception Test simulation. 

  • Driving skills
    In this section, you can learn more about some of the skills you need to drive light and heavy vehicles.

School Drug Education and Road Aware logo

School Drug Education and Road Aware has developed a pre-driver program called Keys for Life, to assist school staff to deliver pre-driver training to Year 10-12 students. Participating students receive free resources and a discounted rate on their Learner’s Permit.

A one day workshop is compulsory for teachers wishing to conduct the Keys for Life program.
