Promoting vehicle safety

The Department encourages manufacturers to improve primary and secondary vehicle safety design features by promoting vehicle safety initiatives.

Primary safety

Primary safety design features are those that improve a driver's ability to avoid an accident, such as effective fail-safe braking systems or unobstructed fields of view.

Secondary safety

Secondary safety design features are those that provide increased occupant protection, such as seatbelts, air bags and crumple zones.

ANCAP - Australian New Car Assessment Program

The Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP)
provides consumers with information about how well new vehicle models may protect their occupants in serious crashes.

All Australian Automobile Association clubs, and the state government road and transport authorities in Western Australia, Queensland, NSW, South Australia and Victoria support the program.

Other related initiatives

  • Child Restraints

  • Provisions for the Disabled / Disabled Vehicles

  • Load Restraints

  • The Department works closely with the WA Office of Road Safety on a range of initiatives, including the promotion of "Safer Vehicles in the Workplace".
