Practical assessment

The driving assessment applies to new drivers.

Booking an assessment

Get as much experience as possible before you book a driving assessment. You will find it difficult to pass if you only do a few ‘practice runs’.

How to book an assessment

To book an assessment call 13 11 56 or visit a Licensing Centre with your learner’s permit. Alternatively, your driving instructor can book an assessment on your behalf.

If you want to be assessed driving a Multi-Combination vehicle, there are now registered training organisations that are authorised to conduct Multi-Combination training and assessment courses.

How to cancel your assessment

Your application fee includes one driving assessment. If you do not cancel your booking within two working day of the test or fail the assessment, you will have to pay an additional SSI - subsequent PDA resits $71.80 for another assessment. To cancel your booking, without forfeiting your assessment, you must call 13 11 56 at least two working days before your assessment appointment.

This payment can be made by Mastercard or Visa by calling the Customer Contact Centre on 13 11 56 Mon-Fri, 8am – 5pm.  Alternatively, payment can be made in person at any Licensing Centre.

The day of your driving assessment

On the day of your assessment, you should take your learner’s permit with you to the nominated Assessment Centre.

You must have a roadworthy and registered vehicle to be assessed.

When you arrive at the Assessment Centre, tell the staff that you have a practical driving assessment appointment.

Make sure you are on time - if you are late, you will not be assessed and you will have to pay for another assessment.

It is illegal to offer of a gift or payment to ensure the issue of a driver’s licence. If you do so, you will be prosecuted.

After you pass your assessment

When you have passed the driving assessment you will be issued with another learner's permit and a log book and still display your L plates.

During this phase, you will still have to drive under supervision. You will also have to accumulate a minimum of 25 hours of driving experience which must be recorded in the log book. The log book must be signed by your supervisor. You will also need to take at least 6 months to accrue this driving experience. (Some exemptions apply)

You may drive up to a maximum speed of 100 km/h (where permitted) and you can also drive on freeways, however you are still not permitted to drive within King's Park.

To get your licence you only need 25 hours of supervised driving. But because we know that learners get better with experience, we recommend that you get 120 hours!
