How am I assessed?
The assessment has a number of sections - in some sections you will be asked to follow directions and in others sections you will have to perform set exercises.
For information regarding the skills you require to become a safe driver the Vehicle Competency Standards section will provide you with more detailed information. This information is not just relevant to the Practical Driving Assessment, but is useful once you have passed the Practical Assessment.
Following directions
When you are following directions, the assessor will be telling you when to make turns at intersections and guiding you on the journey from the Assessment Centre and back again.
Performing set exercises
When you are performing exercises, the assessor will explain to you what you have to do. You will have to decide the best way to do the exercise for yourself. The exercises cover the sorts of tasks drivers often have to do, such as finding somewhere to park in a car park.
The exercises in the practical driving assessment will combine two low speed manoeuvres into an everyday driving situation. The exercises have been given names such as Stopping for Shopping and I've Left Something Behind.
The manoeuvres
So that you don't get any surprises during the assessment, you should try various combinations of manoeuvres to build your own practice exercises. The manoeuvres which will be included in the three exercises in your assessment will be selected from the following set of ten manoeuvres.
| 1. |
Drive forward into a driveway on the right, then reverse and change direction.

Assessment items
While you drive, the assessor watches you and uses assessment items to help judge your performance. The assessor records the judgement by indicating YES or NO on the assessment score sheet as you drive, usually at the end of each section.
Please see the Develop your skills section for more information on the assessment items.
