Regional driving assessments
The Department takes on driving assessments in regional Western Australia
From 16 June 2008 the Department for Planning and Infrastructure will commence a roll-out strategy taking complete responsibility for driver licence assessments in WA.
This means that learners who live in towns where the local police have previously undertaken driving tests will now be assessed by the Department's assessors.
This will lead to a single State-wide assessment approach to driver testing.
Regional learners will undertake the same Practical Driving Assessment as their metropolitan counterparts. There are a range of brochures and publications explaining the process.
Learners will now need to contact the Department to make an appointment for an assessment.
By July 2008 WA Police will only conduct driving assessments in agreed isolated areas and at remote Indigenous communities where multi-functional policing facilities are located. These areas include:
- Eucla
- Kiwirrkurra
- Marble Bar
- Nullagine
- Balgo
- Bidjadanga
- Kalumburu
- Warburton
The change will occur in two stages. On 16 June 2008 learners in the following regions will undertake their assessment with the Department:
- South West
- Great Southern
- Wheatbelt
- Peel
- Pilbara
- Kimberley
On the 23 June 2008, learners in the following regions will undertake their assessment with the Department:
- Mid-West
- Gascoyne
- Goldfields/Esperence
To ensure an appropriate level of licensing services is maintained, the Department has appointed a number of additional driving assessors.
They will visit the towns on a regular basis, according to demand and will be fully trained in all classes of vehicles.
Learners who live close to one of the Department's regional offices - will be unaffected by the changes. These changes are the final steps in a transitional handover arrangement which will free up local police to concentrate on more front-line policing duties.

The Department is taking bookings for assessments now. Learners are encouraged to make their bookings as early as possible, as this will increase their chance of getting a preferred assessment date and time.
