How to apply to learn to drive a heavy vehicle

When can you apply for a learner's permit?

You can apply for a learner's permit at any Licensing Centre or agency as soon as you meet the eligibility requirements to hold that particular permit.

Do you have to sit a test?

Depending on the classes you currently hold and the classes that you are applying for, you may have to sit the heavy vehicle theory test. This test consists of 10 questions of which you have to get 8 or more correct to pass. The table below outlines if you have to do the test or not.

Class applied for Theory test requirement.
LR (light rigid) No test required if applicant holds a WA or interstate driver's licence.
MR (medium rigid) Must sit test.
HR (heavy rigid) Must sit test if C or LR class held.No test required if MR class held.
HC (heavy combination) No test required.
MC (multi combination) No test required.

You can download the heavy vehicle theory test: Questions and Answers for MR, HR and HC Licences - pdf 431kb or contact Licensing for a copy.

Before learning to drive

You no longer need an actual learner's permit in order to learn to drive a different class of vehicle.

Therefore, you will only need to visit a Licensing centre or agent to under go an eyesight test before being allowed to learn a new class of vehicle.

Please note, you will still need to drive under adequate supervision for that class of vehicle and display 'L' plates at all times.

The following are the class of vehicles in which you can receive tuition while learning to drive a heavy vehicle.
