LPG subsidy scheme

On Friday 20th October 2000, the introduction of a $500 Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) subsidy scheme was announced, to provide a financial incentive for the use of LPG as an alternative motor vehicle fuel.

When used as an alternative to petrol, LPG provides a reduction in greenhouse gases of around 15% to 20% and produces 20% less smog-forming emissions.

Effective from Monday 7 August 2006, the LPG subsidy has been increased to $1,000.

Under the scheme, owners of vehicles that are Licensed as "family" vehicles are eligible to receive a $1000 subsidy for:

  • the conversion of an existing Licensed vehicle to a petrol/LPG dual fuel system;

  • the registration of a new vehicle that has been fitted with a petrol/LPG dual fuel system at the time of manufacture;

  • the registration of a new vehicle that has an LPG fuel system as its sole fuel supply; and

  • unlicensed vehicles converted to an LPG or dual fuel petrol/LPG system prior to registration.

A one-off subsidy of $1000 will apply to any eligible vehicles.

What vehicles are eligible?

Only vehicles Licensed as family vehicles are eligible for the subsidy, business vehicles are NOT eligible.

A family vehicle is a motor car or motor wagon, tare weight not exceeding 3000 kg registered solely for social, domestic or pleasure purposes. The vehicle is not to be used to carry passengers or goods for hire or reward, or in any business, trade or profession.

Only vehicles that are currently registered or re-registered in Western Australia are eligible for the $1000 subsidy. Where a new or unlicensed vehicle is converted to an LPG fuel system, the subsidy will only be paid upon registration of the vehicle in Western Australia. Vehicles registered in other States or Territories are not eligible.

How will the subsidy be administered?

Once you have had your LPG unit installed by a licensed gas fitter, you will then need to get your vehicle examined. If your vehicle passes the examination, the vehicle examiner will stamp your application form.

You will then need to submit your completed application form and if you are eligible for the subsidy, you will receive the $1000 rebate.

Does your vehicle need to be inspected?

All vehicles converted to an LPG or petrol/LPG dual fuel system must be examined for roadworthiness by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure vehicle examiners or authorised agents.

A vehicle examination must be carried out before you will receive the rebate.
