Late vehicle renewals
From 4 December, if your vehicle licence is not renewed within 15 days after the expiry date, the law prevents you from driving it on the road.
However, you have up to 3 months after the expiry date to pay the renewal fees without the requirement for the vehicle to be inspected. The renewal period will be calculated from the previous expiry date where the fees are paid within this 3-month period.
Vehicle licence fees that have not been paid within 3 months of expiry will not be renewed and will require an inspection to facilitate a new licence being issued.
Please note that if you do not renew your vehicle licence within 3 months of expiry, you will be required to return the number plates to avoid a penalty being issued.
Vehicle registration fees
Vehicle registration fees are made of three parts :
Vehicle registration fees vary depending on the type of vehicle and whether the owner is eligible for a concession.
Standard and Private rates
The account for certain types of vehicles requires the owner to choose between Private and Standard rate payment options.
If the wrong rate is paid and the vehicle is at fault in an accident that results in a claim for personal injury by a third party then the owner may be in breach of the policy of insurance. This may then result in a recovery action by the Insurance Commission of Western Australia for the costs of settling that personal injury claim, in accordance with the Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act 1943.
You must pay the Standard rate if the vehicle is:
- not registered in the name of an individual or
- not used exclusively or social, domestic or pleasure purposes or
- is used in part or wholly for any business, trade or professional purposes
