Why has the government introduced the LPG subsidy scheme?

To encourage greater use of LPG fuel for motor vehicles at a time when motorists are suffering the impacts of high petrol prices.

Additionally, LPG provides a reduction in greenhouse gases of around 15% to 20% and around 20% less smog forming pollution.

When does the LPG subsidy scheme come into effect?

The scheme has already commenced as from the 20th October 2000. Prior to 7 August 2006, the subsidy was $500. This has now been increased to $1000.

How much is the subsidy?

The subsidy is $1000.

Who is eligible to claim the subsidy?

Under the subsidy scheme, owners of vehicles that are licensed as "family" vehicles are eligible.

If I buy a new car that has LPG or petrol/LPG dual fuel system, can I claim the subsidy?

Yes.

If I buy a new car that has LPG as it's sole fuel supply, can I claim the subsidy?

Yes.

Does my vehicle have to be inspected if I have it converted to LPG?

Yes.

If I have a second hand (reconditioned) LPG unit fitted to my car, do I qualify for the subsidy?

Yes, the scheme is designed to encourage the use of LPG as an alternative motor vehicle fuel supply.

I had my car converted to LPG before the announcement of the subsidy scheme, do I qualify for the subsidy?

No, the payment of subsidies only applies to vehicles fitted with an LPG fuel system on or after the commencement date of 20th October 2000.

Do I have to have my car converted to LPG?

No, the scheme is voluntary.

Is there a limit to the number of subsidies the government is offering?

No.

How do I apply for the subsidy?

Before you apply for the subsidy, you must have your vehicle inspected after the LPG unit has been fitted. If your vehicle passes the examination, the vehicle examiner will stamp your LPG subsidy application form.

You need to get your application form stamped before you submit your form or your application will be rejected.

You can download and application form from this website.

Where can I get information about the cost of an LPG conversion?

You will need to contact a licensed (motor vehicle) gas fitter.
