Transfer guidelines for metropolitan taxi plates

Documents required from the Seller
Before you can sell your taxi plates you will need to submit:
  • Application to Sell Taxi Plates.

  • Taxi plate ownership certificate.

  • Letter from financier.
    If there is a financial encumbrance over your taxi plate ownership. The letter needs to confirm they have no further interest and no objection to the transfer (please ensure the relevant plate number is quoted).

After the transfer is approved:

  • Acknowledgement letter.
    Letter must state that you (the owner) have received payment in full for the taxi plate (state plate number) and therefore have no objection to the transfer proceeding.


Documents required from the Buyer

In order to buy a taxi plate you must supply the following:

  •   Buyer's application to Buy Taxi Plates

Before lodging the application at the Passenger Services you will also need:

  • Proof of stamp duty.

    The Passenger Services cannot accept the application if proof of stamp duty being assessed and paid is not produced. Stamp duty is paid to:

  • National Police Certificate. Application forms are available from any Post Office. ($44.50).

    Please note: The certificate is not required if you are a current holder of a "T" endorsed licence.Once the transfer is approved, an appointment time will be made to effect the transfer.A transfer fee will be payable to the Passenger Services at this time.

If you are purchasing the plates in the name of a company, trust or deceased estate, please provide the following documentation:

  • Company
    • Memorandum and articles of association or a certified copy. 

    • Recent company extract from Australian Securities Commission. 

    • National Police Certificate, for each of the company's directors.

  • Trust
    • Trust deed or a certified copy

    • National Police Certificate, for each of the trustees.

      Note: if the trustee of the trust is a company, all of the documents listed in 1. and 2. above, must be provided.

  • Deceased Estate
    • Probate documents or a certified copy.

    • Where a taxi plate owner dies intestate, the administrator is required to lodge a Grant of Letters of Administration of the estate or a certified copy.

    • A set transfer fee of $100 applies when the transfer is effected (in accordance with Section 19 of the Taxi Regulations 1995) if the taxi plate ownership is left to a beneficiary of the will.
