Walk WA: A Walking Strategy for Western Australia  (2007 – 2020)

The Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce has recently launched 'Walk WA: A Walking Strategy for Western Australia 2007-2020' (Walk WA).

Walk WA is a whole-of-government whole-of-community strategy developed by the Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce in collaboration with the Department for Planning and Infrastructure's Walking WA Committee, with valuable input from many key stakeholders across State Government, local governments and various non-government agencies.

Walk WA has been devised to enable a coordinated collaborative approach to encourage all Western Australians to walk more and to develop environments in which the decision to walk is easier.

Copies of Walk WA and the first year implementation plan are available at the Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce website.

Network City: community planning strategy for Perth and Peel

In June 2003, the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure launched Dialogue with the city as a deliberate and conscious effort to alter the way strategic planning is undertaken in Western Australia.

This initiative has now been developed into the 'Network City: community planning strategy for Perth and Peel' (2004). The Network City report is available in the Publications section of the Western Australian Planning Commission website.

The goal of Network City is to highlight key elements of planning for the future: The Spatial Plan and Strategy, Implementation: Governance and Process, Planning for a Liveable City, Economy and Employment, Environment and Heritage, and Transport and Infrastructure.

Strategies and actions that will enable the planning objectives to be achieved are outlined in each chapter of the Network City report.

Liveable Neighbourhoods Policy

The operational policy for Liveable Neighbourhoods has been on trial since February 1998. A major review of the document was conducted by the Western Australian Planning Commission.

For more information, see the reports under "Liveable Neighbourhoods" in the Publications section of the Western Australian Planning Commission website

Designing Out Crime Planning Guidelines June 2006

People often say they feel unsafe when walking.  However, if there are more people walking, there will be more ‘eyes’ on the street.

The way we design places, spaces and buildings can also provide a sense of safety and influence the individual’s perception of safety, which will affect their decision on whether to walk more or not.

Good design can reduce opportunities for offending and improve feelings of safety.

For more information, see the “Designing Out Crime Planning Guidelines" report in the Publications section of the Western Australian Planning Commission website.

The International Charter for Walking

“Walking is a fundamental and universal right whatever our ability or motivation and continues to be a major part of our lives, yet in many countries people have been walking less and less.  We choose not to walk because we have forgotten how easy, pleasurable and beneficial it is.”

For more information and to support the International Charter for Walking, please visit the Charter section of the Walk21 website.
