Welcome to Walking
Welcome to the Walking website. Walking is an enjoyable and cost effective form of transport that benefits our community, environment, health and enables us to save money due to rising fuel costs. This site is a one stop shop on the research, policies, strategies and seminars on walking as well as places to walk to, walking group information and sponsorships.
Why Promote Walking?
Walking is an excellent way to get the 30 minutes of physical activity required for optimum health each day. Why we promote walking:
- Walking is a great social activity for people of all ages and fitness levels. Walking was reported by both males and females to be the most common form of physical activity. Find out more at the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.
- Walking reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, and helps maintain a healthy body weight.
- Walking creates more vibrant and safer neighbourhoods.
- Short car trips up to two kilometres are the most fuel inefficient and create more pollution per kilometre.
- Walking is low cost form of transport - Save money on petrol costs and walk instead of driving short trips.
